The 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee just keeps getting better. The 5-passenger Grand Cherokee isn’t the newest tool in Jeep’s shed, yet despite its age, it continues to dominate the field in the areas of luxury, performance and off-road capability. Competitively priced to take on the Ford Edge, Toyota 4Runner and Nissan Murano, many owners consider the Grand Cherokee a more luxurious vehicle on par with the Audi Q5 and Land Rover Discovery.
While few can match the Grand Cherokee’s off-road chops, even fewer have anything to compete with the performance-oriented SRT and 707-horsepower Trackhawk versions. Yet even the most basic trim comes nicely equipped and can be outfitted with numerous upgrades including cutting-edge driver-assist features.

Despite its impressive off-road credentials, the 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee is a remarkably civilized prospect. In both city and highway driving, the Grand Cherokee exhibits the ride comfort of a luxury SUV with the power and handling of a large sedan. Straight-line performance varies by engine choice, but all models exhibit good cornering and braking, with minimal lean in hard turns. The steering still feels a bit soft and the boxy design experiences more wind noise than in sleeker rivals like the Nissan Murano or Ford Edge.
Once off-road, however, the Grand Cherokee’s generous ground clearance and numerous 4-wheel-drive systems provide the confidence to go places the aforementioned competitors dare not tread. Those more interested in what the Grand Cherokee can do on road rather than off will no doubt gravitate to the performance models, with the 475-horsepower SRT trim claiming a 4.8-second 0-60-mph time, and the insane 707-horsepower Trackhawk slicing that time to a mere 3.4 seconds.
JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE TRACKHAWK
Everything about Jeep is big, just like its country of origin, which is why the 707-horsepower supercharged V8 in the Grand Cherokee Trackhawk feels right at home. While not an off-road champ like its siblings, the Trackhawk can decimate just about everything in this segment at the track, including some premium brands costing far more.
QUADRA-LIFT AIR SUSPENSION
While steel springs give a consistent ride and height, the 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee’s available Quadra-Lift air springs mix it up a bit. When so equipped, the Grand Cherokee can lower itself to allow easier access or rise up to 10.6 inches permitting clearance over even the most difficult obstacles. Trailhawk models get an even more robust version, as befitting its mission.
There is no Spartan Grand Cherokee, with even the base Laredo offering a comfortable interior that is well appointed and easily upgraded. Front seats are supportive and legroom is plentiful, but the same cannot be said around back where head- and legroom are only average for the class.
The Grand Cherokee is a 2-row/5-passenger affair, so don’t look for a 3rd-row option. However, there is ample cargo space totaling 36.3 cubic feet behind the rear seat, and with that seat folded, cargo space increases to a generous 68.3 cubic feet. Base models feature manually adjustable cloth seats, but climb the trim ladder and you’ll find leather seating, power lumbar, heated and ventilated seats and numerous luxury add-ons such as a panoramic sunroof.
The 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV has a familiar look that has worn well over the years. Luxurious yet rugged, the GC displays its off-road ability with 8.6 inches of ground clearance (8.2 for the SRT and 8.1 on the Trackhawk).
The Trackhawk stands apart from the other models touting quad tailpipes and “Supercharged” script on the front doors. The Trailhawk’s red tow hooks are another exclusive, as is its big 18-inch off-road wheel-and-tire package and anti-glare hood decal.
In spite of its added ground clearance, the 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee is easy to get in and out of, although the rear liftgate doesn’t open far enough to prevent tall drivers from hitting their head.
Notable Standard Equipment
The Grand Cherokee lineup now spans seven trims, including the roughly $88,000 Trackhawk high-performance SUV. Of course, most buyers will stay far south of that. Starting with the base Laredo, you get a V6 engine, high-resolution 7-inch touch-screen Uconnect system, blind-spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, dual-zone climate control, parking sensors and a rearview camera. We recommend stepping up to at least a Limited model to gain the power liftgate, power front seats, power sunroof, heated front seats, and the ability to opt for the 5.7-liter Hemi V8.
Notable Optional Equipment
From advanced 4-wheel-drive systems to an 8.4-inch touch-screen Uconnect system with navigation and CarPlay/Android Auto capability, there’s a bevy of options available for the 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Some can be had by climbing trims. The Grand Cherokee Trailhawk, for example, comes with the Quadra-Drive II 4WD, plus creature comforts like ventilated front seats — a welcome feature on a hot day. Our ears are pleased with the premium Harman Kardon audio system.
Active safety and driving features include adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, and lane-keeping assist, which can move the vehicle back into a lane if it drifts, and automatic emergency braking if a collision appears imminent and the driver doesn’t take action.
Under the Hood
While Jeep offers no less than four engine options in its Grand Cherokee for 2020, most will roll out the door with either the 3.6-liter V6 or 5.7-liter Hemi V8. In truth the V6 has more than enough power for most needs, although the V8 is better for towing.
The high-performance Grand Cherokee SRT uses a 6.4-liter V8 that spits out 475 horsepower and can blast to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds, while the Trackhawk boasts a 6.2-liter supercharged V8 engine borrowed from the Charger and Challenger Hellcat twins. With 707 horsepower, it screams to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds or less.
The V6 engines come with 2-(rear)-wheel drive (2WD) or optional 4-wheel drive (4WD), while the V8 models are 4WD. All Grand Cherokees use an 8-speed automatic transmission. The Grand Cherokee is rated to tow an impressive 7,400 pounds.

The 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV has a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) starting just under $33,500 for a 2-wheel-drive Laredo model, including the $1,495 destination charge. Higher trims run from the mid-to-high-$40,000 mark, and options can add thousands more. The Trailhawk starts around $46,500 while a Summit begins over $50,000.
From there, prices climb drastically for the niche, high-performance Jeep Grand Cherokee variants. The SRT model starts around $70,000, while the Grand Cherokee Trackhawk begins just under $88,500 and can run to the $100,000 mark with options. While a 6-figure Jeep might sound crazy, it’s also the most powerful and quickest production SUV money can buy, and significantly cheaper than something like a Porsche Cayenne Turbo S.
Against more ordinary rivals like the Ford Edge and Subaru Outback, the Jeep starts higher, but it also comes standard with a V6 engine as opposed to a 4-cylinder.
